a portrait
,   a pet painting   or   other work

Unlike many artists, I prefer to take my own photos. That way I can form my own impressions, and record the all-important details that will capture the essence of the subject.

Prices vary according to size, medium background etc. I am always happy to talk through the options, so please feel free to get in touch.

(For media other than oil - have a look at the digital print   and graphics  pages for some ideas).

  Portraits

the photo session    I begin by taking photos - digital and film. These make up my sketchbook, recording details of clothes and jewellery, poses and expressions.

choosing the pose    Together, we reduce the batch to about five images, from which the client selects one which is the basis for the painting.

background and approach     Background is very much up to the client. It can be anywhere, familiar or imagined, as you choose. Regards style, medium, and the whole treatment of the fig- ure, - abstract, naturalistic, fantastical or whatever - I’m flexible. So whether you have an idea or not, I’m always happy to discuss a project with you.

    Pet portraits

the photo session   This usually takes several hours, and works best in the animal’s own enviroment so it feels relaxed. Taking photos gives me time to get to know the animal, as well as giving me a detailed record of colouring, markings, typical expr- essions and so on.

choosing the pose   Working in digital as well as film means the client can see results immediately, and we can start the editing process together. Later, I select down from the full set to about five images for the client to make the final choice. This photo will be the basis of the painting.

background   The setting can be anywhere: a favourite walk or special spot - your garden or a local woodland. Or if your pet is more of an indoor creature, you might pre- fer an interior setting, perhaps a favourite chair.

And if you’re thinking about how the painting matches the room where you plan to hang it, a plain background or a pattern could be the answer

other subjects   I’m happy to undertake whatever subject you have in mind - a painting of your home or garden, a prized possession or a treasured photo.

murals and decorative work   I‘m also very experienced in decorative paint techniques, and can paint directly onto walls or other surfaces, as well as producing paintings to blend with decor of any period or style.
