This is part of a series of my grass paintings, the canvas is covered in
grass cuttings sealed with acrylic, which I then used as a surface to work on.
This particular painting was created for an exhibition back in 1990 at the Barbican Art
Centre which put on a whole series of events around the rainforest, trying to raise people's
awareness of it's plight and rapid disapearance. Sadly fifteen years later it is still
disapearing at a frightening rate.
The tiger in the painting is not looking proud and fearless, but bowed and fearful,
the figure on the left is a sort of Ganesh figure, their relationship is open to the
viewers speculation.
I wanted the painting to be a celebration of the wonderful colour and diversity of the jungle,
but tinged with sadness and disquiet.
