Segways

Both Segways 1 and 2 are a homage to M.C.Escher, the undisputed king of tesselations. In particular Mosaic 1 and 2 which show all sorts of different figures interlocking, where the negative space around each figure is filled by the positive space of another figure, so in effect there is no space at all between any of the figures.

In Escher's work the figures are defined by different tones, like a chequer board of light and dark, however in mine I chose to use contrasting colours to define the figures, and since the figures are of varying size I used a three way combination of colours.

Strictly speaking these pieces are not tessalations, as with a tessalation it is generally required to be a repeating form, but it is the idea of interlocking shapes that interested me. There is another piece titled Spanglewhite, which uses the idea of interlocking shapes, but in a much more fluid form, nor have I filled the whole canvas, as I wanted to leave some space for the viewer, without them feeling that they were closed in by looking at a painting where everything is at the front of the picture plane.
