My original plan was to do a series of planetary figures, and I still have that plan,
but this is the only figure in this particular style.
I wanted to put all the elements that one associates with the moon together,
so there is a mixture of astrological references and the Tarot.
The two dogs at the bottom, with the crab in the water relate to the tarot card
for the moon, though strictly speaking dogs would not be
under the rulership of the moon. However they do appear on the tarot card.
Dogs
often represent messengers or guardians of the underworld, and there is no doubt
about their wild cousins the wolves being affected by the moon. The crab also
appears on the tarot card, though some times as a crayfish, is also the fourth sign
of the zodiac, ruled by the moon.
The owl being a creature of the night is associated with the moon, and to Hecate,
cer of milk. The deer is a reference to Diana the huntress, another deity who is
connected to the moon.
The figure holds a cup overflowing with wine, or blood. The lunar influence over
women is often charted as affecting our periods and fertility, thus the cup, a
epresentation of the womb, like the moon
